Tips for creating a super blog post!

Since moving from magazine editing to marketing and working as a freelance writer, I’ve had the opportunity to produce every type of content YOU Could IMAGINE, yet since we’re talking about blogs today, I’m going to share my top three tips for constructing engaging posts.

Let’s go!

TIP #1 Make your headline count

Drive away from lengthy headlines.

According to HubSpot, headlines between eight to 12 words are most often shared on Twitter and those between 12 to 14 words are most often shared on Facebook. Another great tip I learned is the power of the colon (not the bodily type!).

Research shows that when you begin your headline with key words describing the overall topic followed by a colon and a little more detail, it can increase readership. E.g. Coding: top 10 tips for starting out.

If you can’t come up with a headline straight away, wait until you’ve finished your post (it’s often easier at the end).

TIP 2# Use subheadings, bullets or numbered lists

According to NewsCred, the average time someone spends reading a blog post is 4.37 seconds. If the post is content heavy with very little white space, you may lose the reader’s interest. This is especially important for legal, finance or tech articles that often require longer posts.

Read over each paragraph and check whether it can be broken down into sections with subheadings, bullets or numbered lists for easier readability.

TIP3# Add media to the mix!

Another great way to keep up engagement is with images or GIFS. The images don’t need to directly explain what your post is about, but they should relate to your story.

There are many websites to source awesome royalty-free images and GIFS, such as Unsplash and GIPHY. While legally you don’t always have to credit the content creators, it’s nice to do so where you can (I try to include their Instagram or website details too).
